Super Sunday.  The very words conjure up vivid memories that for most football fans will stay with them for as long as the game exists.  From it’s humble beginnings it has grown to be the most viewed television show in America every year.  It has transcended American culture and in the process become an entity unto itself.

How will this year’s game be viewed?  Will it surpass all the previous games to be the greatest one ever?  We’ll find out soon enough.  In an effort to prepare for the greatest “unofficial” American holiday there is, starting today through the end of Super Bowl week I will submit for approval a countdown of the top 10 Super Bowls and offer thoughts on each game.

Let’s begin with the games coming in at #10 and #9 on the list.

#10

New England gets a win on last second field goal

For most of the 2001 season the New England Patriots were viewed as a nice, scrappy team having a good year but were not seen by most observers as any type of Super Bowl threat.  The Rams carried the high-octane “Greatest Show On Turf” into New Orleans looking to win their second Super Bowl in three years, and nothing that had happened in the playoffs would make anyone believe that they wouldn’t do just that.  The game would prove otherwise however, as the opportunistic Patriots defense stalled the potent passing attack of Kurt Warner and the Rams offense.  In the second quarter, cornerback Ty Law returned a Warner interception 47 yards for a touchdown, and with a Tom Brady touchdown pass, the underdog Patriots took a 14-3 halftime lead.  The lead would stretch to 17-3 entering the 4th quarter before the favored Rams would be able to mount a comeback, eventually tying the game at 17 in the final minutes.  Faced with little time on the clock and a long field in front of them, the Patriots went for the win instead of playing for overtime; putting together a flawless two-minute drill.  The drive put kicker Adam Vinatieri in position for the game winning field goal, and one of the Super Bowl’s biggest upsets was complete.
