Notable Games

  • TCU

Under Gary Patterson, the Horned Frogs have built a reputation of tough defenses and while they lost a great player like Jason Verrett to the NFL Draft, they will have the impressive Davonte Fields putting pressure on Petty this year.

More from NFL Draft News

  • Oklahoma

Baylor really sent a message to Oklahoma last year, but with the late season of emergence of Trevor Knight, this game could turn into a shootout where each quarterback has to consistently put up points to stay in the game and might be one of the better quarterback matchups this year.

  • Oklahoma State

Baylor had one blemish on their regular season record last year and that was a throttling put on them by Oklahoma State in Stillwater.  This year, in Waco, Petty and the Baylor offense will have their opportunity to enact some revenge.  This year, they have two weeks to prepare for the Cowboys as well.

System Fit

Based on what he has done to this point in his career as well as where he seems to excel, Petty is best suited to play in a more vertical scheme.  There is nothing to say he cannot play in a horizontal offense, but he has somewhat been hamstrung in that area and he is simply better in the vertical game.

One of the questions that has not really been answered to this point in Petty’s career is how he would perform in inclement weather.  For the most part, Petty has been fortunate in that he has played in games where he avoided too much in terms of cold or precipitation.  Nothing he says he cannot do these things, but he might be more palatable right now to teams that play in the South or teams that play in a dome until they can get a good read on how he can operate in those situations.

The last thing Petty has not had much experience with is playing under center.  Based on how well he plays with timing, he should be able to simply put the footwork into play and operate effectively.  He has a pretty good clock in his head and simply having his feet become the clock, if asked, would actually make it easier for him.

Nothing about him necessarily limits him or would dissuade a team from selecting him to play in their system.  He is not an elite mobile threat but he can move and pick up some yardage on the ground and he can make just about any throw on the field.

Draft Projection

Based on 2013 tape: Top 100 Pick

With improvement in key areas in 2014: Top 50 Pick might be his ceiling but his age may have some teams not interested until day 3 as well in the 2015 NFL Draft.
