NFL Draft 2015: St. Louis Rams Team Needs

facebooktwitterreddit

Despite some draft success in recent years, the St. Louis Rams still haven’t gotten over the hump. Part of that has to do with playing in one of the NFL’s toughest divisions, but the Rams have actually done a good job playing up to some top-level competition in recent years. Consistency has been a problem, one that Rams fans hope evens out with recent draft classes maturing into NFL veterans.

But adding another solid class of rookies in the 2015 NFL Draft is a must for the Rams if they are to keep pace in the NFC West. The San Francisco 49ers may have taken a step back, but that isn’t the case for the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks.

To get a look at the Rams remaining needs and outlook for the upcoming draft, I got together with Ramblin’ Fan‘s Blaine Grisak. Below are my questions followed by his answers.

  • 1. How have the team’s draft needs changed since free agency opened?

"I dont think the Rams’ draft needs have really changed since free agency opened, aside from maybe needing a number one receiver as they re-signed Kenny Britt. However, they’ve needed offensive line since the beginning of free agency, and despite having the cap space, have failed to fill that need."

    2. What would you say are the top three needs remaining?

"Offensive line, offensive line and more offensive line. The St. Louis Rams need to be able to keep Nick Foles upright and as it stands right now, they won’t be able to do so on a consistent basis. Besides offensive line, the Rams could used a safety as well as depth at the cornerback position."

    3. Are there any prospects that have caught your eye so far?

"I love Brandon Scherff, the offensive lineman out of Iowa. I believe he is this year’s Zack Martin. The Rams need a physical body on the offensive line and Scherff is just that. Its also hard not to like Amari Cooper, the Rams have had a wide receiver problem over the past couple of years and although they brought back Britt, it would be hard to not draft Cooper at 10. Trae Waynes is another guy that I like. The Rams need an elite guy in the secondary and Wayned is arguably the best in the draft."

    4. What do you think would make for a successful draft for your team?

"If the Rams could fix their offensive line problem with 2-3 solid offensive linemen in the draft that would be successful in my opinion."

    5. So much draft focus often goes to the first few rounds, but is there something you’d like to see your team do in the later rounds?

"It’s very key to find successful players in the later rounds of the draft. Finding a star in the later rounds can really take your team to the next level. Last season the Rams found E.J. Gaines in the sixth, if they could find at least one player in the later rounds that can make an impact next season, it would really help the team take that next step."
