2016 NFL Draft: early look at Baylor’s Corey Coleman

Corey Coleman is the next in a line of Baylor wide receivers who have put up eye-popping numbers. Baylor’s high-flying offense continues to provide tremendous opportunities for its playmakers to stuff the stat book. However, that doesn’t mean it’s preparing its players for the NFL.

I personally want nothing to do with a prospect like Coleman who shows some disturbing tendencies. Watching his tape was painful because of the lack of effort and lack of fundamentals. Baylor is bringing a new meaning to having the quarterback only read one side of the field.

This clip shows Coleman walking through his route looking like he’s going through a laid-back practice:

It’s obviously an accepted practice at Baylor, but will absolutely bring criticism from NFL scouts. Players in the NFL are asked to give full effort on every play. This includes running legitimate routes even if the play is designed to go to the opposite side of the field.

Coleman’s lack of effort also extends to the running game where he also walks towards the defender making no attempt to throw a block. The defensive back was consistently able to shoot past Coleman and get involved in the play.

The ability to give no effort a majority of the time he’s on the field has obviously impacted Coleman’s focus. Too often, he takes his eyes off the football which will lead to drops or an inability to adjust to the football.

It’s increasingly frustrating to watch Coleman because of his obviously talent. He’s a natural pass catcher who plucks the ball away from his frame and can track the ball in the air. Coleman is capable of making tough catches in traffic as well as attack the ball at its highest point.

This clip shows Coleman’s shiftiness and ability to pick up yards after the catch:

However, the talent doesn’t help overcome the lack of NFL readiness. Coleman lack of effort is combined with a limited route tree. He’ll need a lot of work in order to develop into an NFL caliber receiver. Based on what was asked of him at Baylor it’s tough to feel comfortable he’ll put in the work.
