New York Jets 2016 Mock Draft

This is the fifth in a series doing a full 2016 mock draft for an individual team. Next up is a team that was surprisingly good in 2015: the New York Jets. As always this is a mock of what I think that the team will do, not what I would do as the team’s decision maker.

1st: Carson Wentz, QB North Dakota State
The Jets want to come out of this draft with a Qb who can potentially start for them by the end of 2016. Fitzpatrick is a stopgap, Geno Smith is a waste and Bryce Petty just doesn’t have ‘it.’ Wentz might go earlier than this, but they jump on him if he’s there. They could trade up for him or Goff if one of them drops out of the top

5.

2nd: Germain Ifedi, OL TAMU
Ifedi is the latest in the recent run of talented Texas A&M offensive linemen. He’s not as talented as his predecessors were, but he might be more pro ready since he has a better punch, more drive in his block and a nastier disposition. The Jets need help on the right side of their line and Ifedi could help immediately.3rd: Noah Spence, LB Eastern Kentucky
Spence might rise quickly if he impresses the scouts. He’s purely an edge rusher with good hand skill, quickness and attitude. He just was such a headcase off the field that Urban Meyer kicked him off the team. If he’s honest and open about his issues, then this won’t be a problem and he could be a top 40 pick. If he’s evasive, then he’ll drop.

4th: Antonio Morrison, LB Florida
Morrison is a guy who has to clear medical checks to get drafted this high. But if he does, he could go ever higher. He has great attacking ability for a inside backer and in some ways is the anti-Reggie Ragland: mobile, can go from side to side and can cover.

5th: Josh Ferguson, RB Illinois
A sleeper who might rise after scouts start watching his tape. On the field he looks like a poor man’s Gio Bernard: smaller, but great vision, pass catching ability and acceleration. He just seems too small to be a 3 down back. You’ll need a power guy to pair with him.

7th: DJ Reader, DT Clemson
Reader has an amazing combination of size and speed for an interior defensive lineman. He was expected to be a big part of the clemson defense in 2015, but then quit the team only to return late in the season. Until he gives scouts the full story on this, teams will stay away from him until this late in the draft.
