Washington State’s Luke Falk is a name to know as he’s on track to be an early pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Luke Falk is flying under the radar mainly because he played on a below average Washington State team that hasn’t warranted any national attention.  Things are likely to change this year as the team is better overall, but mainly because Falk is an elite talent. The first thing that I noticed while watching Falk’s tape is that Mike Leach’s offense features more intermediate throws than the other spread systems in college football. Things like wide receiver screens and read-option are only a small part of the attack. This is important because it has given Falk the ability to attack over the middle, along the sideline and down the field. He also has plenty of opportunities to read the defense and go through progressions. Falk does a great job remaining balanced in the pocket, working across the field and tying his feet to his eyes when searching for an open target. Many college offenses ask the quarterback to make one read or just focus on one side of the field. The fact that Falk can work through his progressions is something that will help ease his transition to the NFL. Physically, Falk has good height and solid bulk for the position. He’s not an elite athlete, but has a knack for navigating the pocking by side stepping or climbing. This isn’t someone who will hurt a defense with his feet—he wins from inside the pocket. His arm strength is slightly above average and his helped by Falk’s commitment to firing off his back foot. This allows him to generate more than enough zip to all parts of the field. Falk is a naturally accurate passer who squares his body to the target. The majority of his passes throw his receiver open which allows for good yard-after-catch opportunities. His overall ball placement could improve with better anticipation.

Things get a little inconsistent in the deep passing game where Falk will get a little too much loft on the ball. Washington State’s offense does feature a good amount intermediate passes but not enough shots down field. Falk will improve in this area of his game with more experience and repetition. The one thing that he has developed is a feel for the back shoulder throws. His ability to handle pressure is something that he needs to improve on this season. While Falk does a great job sidestepping pressure, there are occasions where he tucks the ball and accepts the sack. This mainly happens when he sees a free rusher. Overall, Falk has all the tools to succeed in the NFL. He has far less question marks surrounding his game than the other quarterback prospects in this draft.
