It looks like the Dallas Cowboys have themselves a backup quarterback now.

This is important because they went 3-1 while Tony Romo was healthy and finished 4-12 for the season. At the same time, it looks like the Cowboys have a quarterback of the future. And the crazy thing about this is the Cowboys used their fourth-round pick to get him.

Many thought they would and should throw themselves into the veteran quarterback market. But the Cowboys stayed the course with Prescott after seeing him in training camp. Then of course, they see what he’s doing this preseason so far and will continue to do so.

Owner Jerry Jones told the Cowboys broadcast team how happy he is with his quarterbacks after the first preseason game. He said, “I don’t see a veteran quarterback on the scene or coming in, as long as we got the uptick arrow of Dak Prescott.”

Prescott killed it in his first preseason action against the Los Angeles Rams. He completed 10 of his 12 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns with a passer rating of 154.5. Friday, it was 12-15 for 199 yards, tow touchdowns and a passer rating of 158.3.

But to put it in perspective, this is the preseason, where defenses are as vanilla as they get. So any talk that has him ready to start right now is a bit premature. Facing a defense led by Rex Ryan, Dick LeBeau, or Wade Phillips is a different deal from what he’s seen.

That’s not what the Cowboys need from Prescott right now anyways as they still have Romo. But Prescott looks like a heck of a pick, giving the team a backup option at quarterback. And when Romo hangs them up, the future on the Cowboys remains bright.
