There has long been talk that the NFL would really benefit from the creation of an NFL Developmental League. It appears that there could be some progress being made in the near future.

CBS insider Jason La Canfora is reporting that the NFL is going to take a closer look at the possibility of creating an NFL Developmental League. This would be a major development and something that could help the level of play.

The NFL is full of young players talented enough to be in the league but too raw make a quick transition. This leads to the more impatient coaches and general managers willing to cut ties with those type of players.

A developmental league would offer an environment for the under developed players to learn and grow.

A type of player that would benefit from a developmental league are those that leave college early for financial reasons. Every year there are a group of NFL prospects that declare for the draft before they’re ready.

Too often these players drop in the draft or go completely undrafted. Some teams would be more willing to take a chance on these high upside players if they knew they had a place for them to land.

All quarterback prospects would greatly benefit from a developmental league. A large majority of colleges run a spread attack that does little to prepare a quarterback for the NFL. These are quarterbacks who rarely work under center, utilize a huddle and make coverage reads.

A developmental league would give these quarterbacks and environment to learn. They’d get a chance to work with NFL coaches and in similar systems used by the parent franchise.

The players aren’t the only ones who’d really benefit as the teams will see positives of their own. Teams like the Cleveland Browns have run through a large number of quarterbacks. A lot of the issues surround the lack of development time.

It’s still early in the process, but it’s easy to see the positives of creating a NFL Developmental League.
