Ohio State’s Gareon Conley is an important part of what is a really talented and effective Buckeyes secondary.

Gareon Conley is a young defensive back who has developed into a reliable performer. He has the size, quickness and instincts needed to fit multiple defensive systems. Ohio State routinely asks him to work in man cover where he is very comfortable.

Conley is an aware cornerback who can identify developing routes, read the quarterback and track the football. He does a good job keeping himself in proper position which allows him to make create turnovers and pass deflections.

That body position is extremely important in contested situations as it helps Conley time his jump and fight through contact.

Conley would be a strong fit in zone coverage because of his short-area burst and ability to read the quarterback’s eyes. He plays with balance and a low pad level that gives him that click and close ability. His ball skills are strong enough that he’s a legitimate threat to pull down the interception.

An area where Conley needs to improve is his effort and tenacity in the run game. He doesn’t consistently fight through blocks in order to make a tackle. In fact, there are plenty of occasions where he allows himself to be driving several yards down field.

The only other thing that jumps out is the fact that Conley’s entire college career surrounded by elite talent. Ohio State’s defensive line generates a lot of pressure on the quarterback which limits the time Conley needs to sit in coverage.

Conley has the talent and football IQ needed to make the jump to the NFL. He’s may not be flashy, but he’s more than capable of getting the job done.
