Le’Veon Bell is one of the more dynamic offensive players in the NFL, but he also comes with some availability concerns.

The Pittsburgh Steelers know how valuable Le’Veon Bell is and the type of impact he has on their offense. He’s a true difference maker who impacts the game as both a runner and pass catcher. This versatility makes it difficult for opposing defenses to avoid mismatches.

However, one of the reasons the Steelers know how valuable Bell is to their offense is because of the time he has missed. Bell has been out of the lineup due to injuries and suspensions.

He’s slated to hit free agency in a few weeks which means the Steelers have a decision to make. They could use the franchise tag to offer some long-term protection or sign him to a long-term deal.

Complicating the situation is the fact that Steelers were able to deal with Bell’s absences thanks to the strong play of DeAngelo Williams. His production helped the Steelers offense remain productive and balanced. Williams is a free agent and could find a home elsewhere. He is also 33 years old and only has a year or two left in the tank.

All this means that Pittsburgh should look at adding a running back early in the 2017 NFL Draft. This year’s draft is loaded with talent at the running back position. They just can’t be 100% sure that Bell will be in the lineup on a week to week basis.

One prospect that makes a lot of sense is NC State’s Matthew Dayes who should come off the board in the middle rounds. He’s someone who would serve as an excellent backup while also having the potential to take on a bigger role.

The fact that he’s expected to be a mid-round pick means the Steelers can use their early picks on addressing more pressing needs.
