The beginning of the NFL Free Agent frenzy is about to start where Geno Smith could be a sneaky good pick up.

Geno Smith has had terrible luck with the New York Jets. He  has been mismanaged by the coaching staff, punched in the face by a teammate and suffered a torn ACL. Smith is responsible for a lot of his struggles but the Jets also didn’t do him any favors.

His stock couldn’t be any lower as he heads into free agency. However, the NFL is starving for quality quarterbacks and is always willing to give a talented player another shot. Smith is a great candidate to receive a 1-year prove it deal to see if he can get his career on track.

He’d be a great option for a team hoping to avoid bringing in a rookie starter. The Chicago Bears come to mind as John Fox will do everything he can to avoid starting a rookie this year. Smith could battle Matt Barkley for the right to be the Bears starting quarterback.

The Cleveland Browns would also make some sense based on Hue Jackson’s willingness to take on a project. A sleeper could be the Arizona Cardinals who need a better backup for Carson Palmer than Drew Stanton.

Smith is someone I personally see as someone capable of surprising a lot of people. He has a ton of natural talent and showed signs of promise at times in his career in New York. Landing in a situation with a strong surrounding cast and good offensive coach could spur a turnaround.

It will be very interesting to see what type of market develops for Smith as the free agency period progresses.
