The Kansas City Chiefs landed themselves a steal when they drafted Toledo’s Kareem Hunt in the 3rd round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Things are going to look very different in the Kansas City Chiefs backfield this year. Long-time stater, Jamaal Charles, is with the rival Denver Broncos and some new players are in the mix. Kareem Hunt is someone who has the talent to quickly establish himself as the every-down back.

According to Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star, he is already making a name for  himself in OTAs.

Hunt is a versatile runner who can work between the tackles and attack the edge. However, it’s his balance and power that make him effective. He’s capable of picking up a lot of yardage after contact.

Hunt features the short-area quickness to attack the line of scrimmage. This allows him to avoid lost yardage and squeeze through quickly closing holes.

He isn’t a burner, but flashes a 2nd gear that helps him break off long runs. His game will be more about moving the chains, but don’t be surprised if he provides some explosive plays. In this way, Hunt reminds me of the Chicago Bears Jordan Howard.

However, Hunt is a better pass catcher who will contribute in the passing game. This is something Andy Reid and company will be sure to feature.

Hunt’s main competition for carries is Spencer Ware who has had solid production. However, Ware doesn’t offer the same type of spark that Hunt shows. It will become quickly apparent Hunt should get a healthy dose of touches.

His impact on the team will be apparent, but those of us who play fantasy football should be willing to grab Hunt earlier than expected.
