The Redskins were criticized for taking Scherff No. 5 overall but they did what they needed to do. The Redskins were way too soft and too small on the offensive line as they are still transitioning from zone blocking. But a pick like Scherff gives them that strong, hard-nosed tough guy they need.

Sure, Griffin needs to be protected and at right tackle, he’ll do just fine protecting his front side. But this pick also seems to be a message saying, “We’re going back to the big, nasty Hogs from the ’80s.” Even if Scherff doesn’t work out at tackle, he will at least work out as a great guard.

And making your team more physical on a soft offensive line is worth taking him No. 5 overall.

Scherff is just what the Redskins needed.
