Oakland Raiders With Big Statistical Years Coming
David Amerson
CB David Amerson came in and played well from the get-go when the Raiders picked him up on waivers by the Washington Redskins. The 2013 second-round pick looked like a budding star for the team at one point. But after a coaching change, Amerson no longer fit with the Redskins do.
The Redskins have become a zone defensive team with head coach Jay Gruden now there. That’s why the team spent big, going after Josh Norman, a zone corner, in free agency this offseason. With his length and athleticism, Amerson is the perfect fit for the Raiders’ bump-and-run system.
After his breakout season, where he was voted Most Improved Player by Pro Football Focus, the Raiders just gave him a big contract. And now, he’s set to have an even better year in 2016. Last year, Amerson was among the league’s leaders on passes defensed because he was picked on.
But has the year went on, opposing teams knew he was the Raiders’ best corner and avoided him. That probably won’t happen this year as the Raiders brought in Sean Smith, a premier corner, on the other side. So Amerson will get more action, leading to eight or nine INTs.
