2018 NFL Mock Draft: Impact of recent trades and signings
The New York Jets have created an opportunity for healthy competition at the quarterback position. It reportedly signed Teddy Bridgewater and Josh McCown to one-year contracts, thus implying that the two will compete for the starting role.
With a franchise quarterback yet to be found, however, the Jets shouldn’t hesitate to invest in the long-term potential of Josh Rosen at No. 6 overall.
In this scenario, Rosen would have an opportunity to compete with Bridgewater or McCown for the starting job. That shouldn’t be an issue, as McCown was compensated well for his one-year deal and Bridgewater likely values the opportunity to reestablish himself in a major market.
This works out well for Rosen, as well, as fighting for and winning the starting job would be the best way possible to silence the concerns about his commitment to football.
With all due respect to Bridgewater and McCown, Rosen should win this hypothetical quarterback competition. The appealing aspect of it, however, is that it will ideally drive all three players to put forth their best effort and teach Rosen an early lesson about earning one’s keep in the NFL.
Rosen is as fundamentally polished as any quarterback in recent memory. If Todd Bowles sees something special in him, he should push for this to happen.
