Scouting Report

In his fifth year after transferring to the Oklahoma University Sooners and under the guidance of head coach Lincoln Riley, former Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts is thriving. A top Heisman candidate, Hurts is posting insane numbers for the Sooners, rushing and throwing for double-digit touchdowns for the Sooners this year and seeing his draft stock take a massive rise in the meantime.

However, Hurts sits with a fifth round grade from this writer as it is evident that Riley has manufactured a system for the Alabama transfer to thrive in. This system consists of only one, two reads at the most, before Hurst is asked to tuck the ball and run for as much yardage as possible.

While Hurts has the arm strength to play football at the next level, he does not display the ball placement, pocket presence, or mental dexterity to thrive in the NFL. It looks like he has limited ability to work through his progressions, and has put his team at risk with turnovers in back-to-back weeks now.

Hurts will more than likely hear his name called in the first round, but he does not show the awareness or ability to read a defense that Lamar Jackson displayed out of college. Again, Hurts will be a first round pick based on how the league is progressing, but he is a risk based on the product he has put on film.
