Scouting Report

Right now the Jets sit just inside the top ten with the ninth pick in the draft, and here they are able to land one of the top tackles in the class. Outside of Georgia’s Andrew Thomas, Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs is the next big name at the offensive tackle position in the 2020 NFL Draft.

More from With the First Pick

Currently starting veteran Kelvin Beachum at left tackle, the Jets are in position to move on from him after this season. Given Beachum’s age, performance, and his contract expiring after the season, it makes sense for the Jets to look for their answer at left tackle elsewhere; this makes Wirfs a good fit for the Big Apple next year.

While Wirfs has played predominantly right tackle for the Hawkeyes, he did fill in at left tackle when Alaric Jackson was injured this season and played the role at a high level. The question that must be asked now: is Wirfs going to leave school early and declare for the draft?

It would make logical sense for Wirfs to choose not to play football for free anymore, especially considering he looks like a top-10 pick, but there is a chance that he could choose to stay another year, move to left tackle, and potentially look to become a top five pick next year. For now, Wirfs is the second best tackle in the draft and lands with the Jets here.
