Something that hasn’t been seen much in mock drafts involving the Cardinals is taking the 8th overall pick and using it to trade back, but in this case, they do. Arizona has a young quarterback in Murray, and they need to surround him with talent; trading back allows them to still get an elite talent (Jerry Jeudy) and have more picks to play within an extremely talented draft class.
After giving D.J. Humphries a contract extension their need for offensive tackle isn’t as big of a need as anticipated, but giving Kyler weapons is. In this draft, there are three wide receivers (Jerry Jeudy, CeeDee Lamb, and Henry Ruggs III) who all have a legitimate argument for “WR1”. Trading back would still give them a great chance at landing one of those receivers and getting the 14th pick also places them in front of the Denver Broncos who have been linked to Ruggs for a while now.
In this scenario, both Ruggs and Lamb (would’ve been the first choice given the two’s history together at Oklahoma) were off the board making Jeudy the easy pick. Don’t get it twisted, getting Jeudy is no consolation prize, he is an elite route runner, who has the potential to be a top 10 receiver in the league. With Kliff Kingsbury calling the plays and Kyler throwing the ball this gives Jeudy a legit chance to be successful right out of the gate.
The Cardinals need help up-front and when you consider the teams in their division: the Los Angeles Rams, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Seattle Seahawks (all three teams rely heavily on the run game) they really need help on the front-four. Justin Madubuike is just the guy to answer the call. Madubuike had a great final season, but he has still yet to reach his full potential; with a great defensive mind in Vance Joseph, he could possibly get there.
Early on his career, Madubuike should have no trouble holding up against the run, he is powerful at the point of attack and certainly has room to put on more muscle; he put up an impressive 31 reps on the bench press putting him in the top 84th-percentile (according to mockdraftable.com). Madubuike has a ton of room to grow and the athleticism that should intrigue any defensive coordinator.
