Round 3, Pick 78: Van Jefferson, WR, Florida

After trading Mohamed Sanu to the New England Patriots in 2019, the Falcons have a hole at third receiver. The Falcons are expected to go heavy “11” personnel, meaning they would need a third receiver on the field to go along with Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley. The team brought in former Vikings first round pick, Laquan Treadwell, but his reliability has never been one that can be counted on.

Florida’s Van Jefferson is one of the most highly talked about day two prospects in this year’s draft. Jefferson’s greatest trait is his route running. While his production was limited in Florida’s offense, he showed out at the senior bowl in Mobile. With his ability to run a diverse route tree, and run it well, he’s a player who can contribute right away, which is huge for a team that had limited free agent resources.

Jefferson can fit into any scheme that he is thrown into. His silky smooth route running compensates for his average athleticism. At Florida, Jefferson was faced with elite cornerbacks seemingly every week in the SEC. Through all this, he was able to shine each week. Had Jefferson been on a team with more talent at the quarterback position, his production would have been better. In the middle of the third round, this is a great value pick.
