Lamical Perine, RB, New York Jets

Perine’s collegiate production does not suggest he is a running back ready to usurp Le’Veon Bell.

He finished 2019 with 676 yards on the ground and six rushing touchdowns, having run for 826 yards and seven scores a year earlier.

A relative of Samaje Perine and Myles Jack, Perine is a player who is solid but unspectacular in every area. However, that could be enough for him to earn a prominent role with the Jets as a backup and potentially a starter if Bell again disappoints for New York in 2020.

Bell averaged a career-low 3.2 yards per carry in 2019. Should he fail to meet expectations again in the coming season, the Jets can get out of the final two years of his contract – in which he is scheduled to earn over $28m – at the cost of just $4m in dead cap.

Anything resembling a promising start from Perine could help force their hand and he has the skill set to do that. Possessing an impressive blend of vision and contact balance, Perine can stay on his feet through contact as a runner and has demonstrated improvement as a receiver. Last season saw Perine catch a career-high 40 balls for Florida for 262 yards and five touchdowns.

Bell’s appeal is in large part down to his ability to impact the running game and the passing attack. Perine, likely to be available in the later rounds of rookie drafts, can do the same and could be in a position to do so as a starter if the incumbent shows further signs of decline this year.
