Eagles: Examining role of first round WR Jalen Reagor in 2020
By Cory Kinnan
How Jalen Reagor will impact the Eagles beyond 2020
Jalen Reagor will be a day-one star in the Philadelphia offense, while he will continue to shift his role as the NFL’s offensive philosophies continue to shift, his overall style of play will stay the same. When a guy like Reagor is on the field, the goal should be to get him the ball as often as possible in space.
Pro Football Network’s Nick Farbaugh also speaks quite highly of Reagor, having this to say about him pre-draft:
"“Reagor has a skill set that is so valuable in the modern NFL, and that is what makes him underrated. Just like Brandin Cooks, DeSean Jackson, and the speedsters with nuance before him, they unlock offenses and force defenses to cater their coverages to them. Reagor offers that very thing while still being able to threaten defenses with manufactured touches due to what he can do after the catch. Reagor is a legitimate first-round talent” (Farbaugh via PFN)."
Given that Reagor will be asked to do a ton for the Eagles in 2020, it is hard to envision more being put onto his plate beyond his rookie year. If he and Philadelphia find success in what they are doing in their rookie year, then look for both sides to do more of the same far into the future; if it is not broke, do not fix it.
During his time at TCU, however, Reagor also was a gem on special teams for the Horned Frogs. Another element in getting the ball into their first rounder’s hands may include the Eagles using Reagor as a return specialist early on and often as well. He returned two punts for touchdowns for the Horned Frogs in 2019, so this is an element of the game Reagor is quite comfortable with.
Overall, while it may seem to public perception that the Eagles whiffed on Reagor, they actually got one of the more underhyped players in the first round. Jalen Reagor has a role cut out for him in Philadelphia from day-one, and he looks to capitalize on it and carry his dynamic playmaking ability far into the future.
