LSU Football: What is the 2021 NFL Draft outlook of Tyler Shelvin?
By Cory Kinnan
Where Tyler Shelvin shows room for improvement
Watching Shelvin is a bit of a difficult watch as he is a rather scheme-specific player. A two-down player, Shelvin does not offer much as a pass rusher and often comes off the field in those situations as he lacks versatility.
While Shelvin has strong hands, as previously mentioned, he lacks a counter move as a pass rusher and as he looks to take up space. If the offensive lineman across from him stops his initial attack, Shelvin’s rep tends to be over as he cannot get free. He is a bit slow off of the line of scrimmage, struggles with his pad level out of his stance, and cannot move laterally, and has heavy feet as he looks to hold the point of attack.
If a player is going to make space eating their claim to fame, then they must be able to do just that on a consistent basis in order to be successful: take up space. Especially in the Alabama matchup in 2019, Shelvin remained unsuccessful in taking up space and keeping offensive linemen off of the second level. In fact, Alabama center Landon Dickerson managed to handle in without a combo block.
We now turn to Shelvin’s 2021 NFL Draft projection as he prepares for the Scouting Combine.
