The Cleveland Browns are now on the clock

Sitting with a record of 8-3 on the season, the Cleveland Browns are looking to secure a winning record for the first time since 2007. This also means they will be picking outside the top-ten for once, currently holding the 24th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft as the regular season draws closer to a conclusion.

By the time the main event rolls around in April, we should have a clearer picture as to whether or not Baker Mayfield will be the quarterback of the future for the Browns. However, at this point in the season, things are beginning to trend in the right direction for the former Heisman Trophy winner and first overall pick.

This means the most of their assets will be invested on the defensive side of the ball as they cannot seem to field a healthy or consistent defense. Outside of edge rusher Myles Garrett, cornerback Denzel Ward, and safety Ronnie Harrison, the Browns do not have any other player on the defensive side of the ball who has proven to be a solid mainstay on the roster.

Here in this 2021 NFL Mock Draft, the Browns start off on defense in round one, getting Ward a running mate, but it will not be the last defensive pick.

Round 1, Pick 24: Jaycee Horn, CB, South Carolina

It is becoming obvious the Browns cannot rely on Greedy Williams; availability is the best ability, and Williams has been anything but. After landing with the Browns in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, a John Dorsey draft pick, has missed every game this season after missing four as a rookie a year ago as well.

As Andrew Berry looks to upgrade his defense, getting Denzel Ward a dependable running mate outside the numbers must be a priority for the Browns this offseason. Besides, Williams can always move into the nickel until he can prove he can serve as a healthy, dependable starter in Cleveland.

Here, the Browns use their first round pick on South Carolina cornerback Jaycee Horn. After a dominant season a year ago for the Gamecocks, Horn again started out on a hot foot, as he is a bully in man coverage. He has now opted out of the rest of the season as he projects as a first round pick. Now, the Browns pair Horn with Ward as they build their defense back to front.
