Colts focused in-house as free agency began
Indianapolis General Manager Chris Ballard entered this offseason clearly intent on prioritizing the team’s impending free agents, seeing to it that veterans T.Y. Hilton, Xavier Rhodes, and Marlon Mack were back on board before turning to the open market.
In the wake of Anthony Castonzo’s retirement, the Colts added a pair of veteran free agent offensive tackles in Julien Davenport and Sam Tevi. Davenport, a former starter at left tackle for the Houston Texans who was dealt to the Miami Dolphins following the 2018 season, could be considered in decline after a 2020 season that saw him start a single game in Miami.
Tevi makes his way to Indy after spending his first four years in the league with the Los Angeles Chargers and figures to compete for the team’s reserve/swing tackle position after a less-than-stellar 3 years starting turn in L.A. The Colts further addressed the offensive line with the addition of guard Chris Reed, who served as a starter at guard for the Carolina Panthers in 2020, before adding a pair of defenders in Isaac Rochell and Sean Davis.
Rochell, a rotational defender for the Chargers are best known for his five sack season in 2018 as an injury replacement for Joey Bosa, figures to offer inside-out versatility along the defensive front in Indianapolis. Davis comes to the Colts with 42 starts to his credit as a safety for the Pittsburgh Steelers, though his on-field contribution has been virtually nil since suffering a shoulder injury in week 2 of the 2019 season.
