Trading back gives a potentially rebuilding team more assets

Now, trading back is something everyone just assumes you can do but it does not always work that way. In order to actually make a deal, you need a realistic trade partner that is willing to meet your demands (I.E. picks) and also is in desperate need of whoever is left on the board. That may be a tall task, but if possible this possibility brings a lot of intrigue.

While the three options previously laid out are all widely discussed options for the Falcons there is one thing the team is in desperate need of and could be perfectly happy sitting at four and selecting. That position is the offensive line.

The Falcons currently have Jake Mathews and Kaleb McGary as their offensive tackles. Mathews contract makes it hard for the team to move on from him, so chances are he is the team’s starter for at least two more years, which is fine as he is still a good player. On the other side though is McGary, who has struggled a good bit during his career. He was the Falcons first round draft pick in 2019, but that was under a different regime.

Both Arthur Smith and Terry Fontenot have heavily invested in the offensive line throughout their careers with their previous teams. While with the Saints, Fontenot was a part of a front office that heavily invested in the offensive line with multiple early-round picks, and ended up building one of the best lines in the league. This opens the doors for an offensive tackle to be the pick early on, especially if the team thinks they can win with Ryan.
