Sam Ehlinger the once highly touted prospect goes late in the NFL Draft

If I told you after the 2019 season that Sam Ehlinger would not be drafted until after the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft you would have thrown me out a window. But, here we are days away from the draft and there is little to no chance that happens. Sam now projects as a 100+ pick in the NFL Draft.

Ehlinger had an elite set of years between 2018 and 2019 with back-to-back 3,000+ yard seasons and in 2018 he threw 25 touchdowns to just five picks in 14 games. In that same 2018 season, he had 482 yards rushing with 16 touchdowns on the ground.

After that season we thought we had the next big thing alongside Trevor Lawrence in Ehlinger, which turned out not to be the case as his career went on. Though to be fair to Ehlinger here, there have been lots of changes and issues during his time at Texas. Between not just coaches, but players as well. There was a mass set of transfers not too long ago from the orange and white. His 2020 season was good, but not great throwing for 2,566 yards with 26 touchdowns and just five picks and continuing his work on the ground though he did post career-low rushing yards with 377 yards, but ran for eight touchdowns.

Ehlinger is more mobile than he gets credit for with his 6-foot-3 and 225-pound frame.

He should be higher in the draft, but the talent in this class is really good. So it’s hard to envision him going high, with the pure amount of quarterbacks in this class. He will fall victim to depth at the position, and teams unsure of what type of quarterback they are getting. As at times, he looked great, and other times, well he looked just like a quarterback who will be drafted where he will be.
