Marcus Mariota
In stark contrast to Winston, Tennessee Titans No. 2 overall Marcus Mariota has been mistake free. According to The Tennessean‘s unofficial training camp stats, he has yet to be intercepted once through four days of training camp. While playing mistake free in camp, he has unofficially completed 67.1 percent of his passes.
Mariota isn’t as advanced as Winston is in a pro style system so the Titans approach with Mariota is different. They’re not throwing all the different looks he’ll see just yet but he’s doing a good job of learning to play like an NFL quarterback. Most reports out of camp have him throwing with anticipation and into tight windows, unlike what he did in college.
Mariota is actually coming along faster than the Titans thought he would with the basic fundamentals in a pro style offense. Quarterbacks coach John McNulty said, “There were a couple things in his footwork with the run game, and now he’s got it aced. So obviously he worked on that over the five weeks.
“It’s just getting out from under center, and getting to different landmarks quick enough so he wasn’t cutting the back off. “It just was a little glitch on how he was taking the snap from under center. We worked on it here, but obviously he had a million things to think about. So we figured, ‘All right, we’ll get that ironed out eventually.’
“He came back from the summer and he had it down like he’d been doing it for 20 years.”
