2017 NFL Draft: Florida State DeMarcus Walker Scouting Report
By Jon Dove
Florida State’s DeMarcus Walker is an elite athlete who is a player to watch during the 2017 NFL Draft process.
DeMarcus Walker features the size, length and athleticism evaluators look for in an edge rusher. He has extremely long arms that help him keep blockers off his frame and give him the ability to bat balls at the line of scrimmage.
Walker also has a good solid frame that gives him the ability to shift inside and play a little defensive tackle. That frame also has enough room to add more bulk if necessary.
This is an explosive athlete who can attack the edge and close on the quarterback. He plays with excellent balance which helps him flatten out and change direction. His quickness allows Walker to also close the back door and disrupt the timing of the offense.
Walker has the physical attributes needed to develop into a high-impact player in the NFL. However, he needs to improve his overall technique and effort in order to reach his potential.
There are situations where he doesn’t give 100% effort and appears to give up on the play. It’s unlikely this is a conditioning issue as Florida State has the depth to rotate players on and off the field. Walker isn’t a low-motor guy, but he needs to show more tenacity on a consistent basis.
His effort and technique against the run is another area that needs to improve. He doesn’t consistently fight through contact and needs to do a better job disengaging. Walker has the upper-body strength needed to improve this part of his game if he focuses on gaining inside hands.
As a pass rusher, Walker has tremendous upside but must develop a deeper arsenal of moves. His main focus should be to add a power rush. He has the base to add this move thanks to his long arms, natural strength and commitment to keeping his pads down.
Walker could easily establish himself as a top-5 prospect if he continues the development he has shown thus far in his career.
