The Denver Broncos will be breaking in a new starting quarterback this year and it could very well be Trevor Siemian.

Mark Sanchez will be given the first chance to win the starting quarterback job, but word is this will be an open competition. Andrew Mason of broncos.com recently wrote about how most feel Siemian will get a “legitimate shot” to win the job.

This situation is very intriguing because Denver lost two quarterbacks in the offseason when Peyton Manning retired and Brock Osweiler signed with Houston. Osweiler signing elsewhere is what really put Denver’s plans in flux.

He was drafted to be the eventual replacement for Manning and had plenty of time to learn from the future Hall of Famer. However, it’s obvious that the Broncos didn’t value him as much as the Texans.

This leaves them with less than ideal options in Sanchez, Siemian and rookie Paxton Lynch. It’s odd to see the defending Super Bowl Champion head into the next season with such uncertainty at the quarterback position.

John Elway’s lack of urgency to bring in better talent at the position speaks to the belief he has in his coaches. Gary Kubiak and company have their work cut out for them as Sanchez has proven to be a below average starter with the other two options with no experience.

The NFL season is long and unpredictable, but it’s hard to feel good about Denver’s chances to repeat as Champions. Their quarterback situation appears to be the biggest hurdle but loss of talent on the defensive side of the ball is also a concern.

Denver will give the starting quarterback job to whoever has the best training camp, but my money is on the veteran Mark Sanchez winning the job. However, Siemian obviously has supporters in the building.
