2017 NFL Draft: Texas A&M Myles Garrett Scouting Report
By Jon Dove
Texas A&M’s Myles Garrett is my top overall prospect eligible for the 2017 NFL Draft.
Myles Garrett is an elite prospect who projects as a highly productive pass rusher at the next level. He has a combination or elite quickness, instincts and tenacity. The only way I see him not being the No. 1 overall pick is if the team holding that spot prefers a quarterback.
Garrett features a deadly combination of snap awareness and an elite first step. He’s routinely the first player out of his stance and explodes up field. His closing speed makes him someone who’ll consistently get home and register the sack rather than just creating pressure.
Offensive linemen need to be on their toes because Garrett has a wide-array of pass rush moves. He plays with excellent balance and a low pad level which gives him the ability to change direction. Garrett has a feel for when the blocker is off balance and when to execute an inside counter.
His commitment to maintaining leverage helps him convert his speed to power and knock the blocker into the pocket. Garrett also does a great job dipping his shoulder around the edge and flattening out.
Against the run, he plays with both integrity and tenacity. Garrett routinely fires off the ball and uses his hands to deliver a jolt. His quickness off the ball allows him to cross the face of the blocker and shoot the gap.
Garrett is an instinctual player who quickly identifies the location of the ball carrier. This helps keep him in proper position and routinely around the football. He’s a true playmaker who not only gets after the quarterback but can stuff the run and pull down interceptions off deflected throws.
This is a prospect who has it all and as close to a sure-fire star as we have seen in a long time. He not only has the physical traits to be an elite player but also plays with a non-stop motor and has a natural feel for the game.
