Rex Ryan Trying to Make the Buffalo Bills His Kind of Team
Rex Ryan nows he will get fired if he doesn’t turn things around soon. So he figures he might as well do things his way while trying to do it.
At 0-2, very young in the season, Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan fired offensive coordinator Greg Roman. The team announced the move Friday afternoon. Anthony Lynn, the team’s assistant head coach and running backs coach, will assume the position.
Many question the move, calling it a “panick move”, saying it’s to soon to fire anyone. Others believe that the Bills woes aren’t on Roman and that Ryan needs to look in the mirror. Afterall, the Bills did score 31 points Thursday night and still lost the game.
But any defense that’s on the field that long risks losing the game for the team. Sure, the Bills offense was explosive, making big plays but had only 16 first downs to New York’s 28. They went a paltry 3-for-10 on third down and possessed the ball for only 20 minutes.
When your opponent doubles your time of possession, you won’t win a lot of games in the NFL. Ryan didn’t inherit the type of team he likes on offense or defense last year to begin with. He had an explosive offense over his ground and pound and 4-3 personnel on defense.
So Ryan made a lot of changes to the defense to fit his 3-4, including cutting defensive end Mario Williams. So he now, he stylistically has the type of defense he wants. He just needs a coordinator that can possess the ball and rest his defense.
Roman is a good coordinator but Ryan made this decision to go back to playing the way he knows how. And he promoted Lynn because he knows the drill from their Jets days. He wants to ground and pound on offense and for the defense to win the game.
Ryan is under pressure himself so you can’t blame him for doing it his way.
