Pocket Change – Preseason Week 1

Looks like a few teams are ready for the season RIGHT NOW.  The Rams, Buccaneers, Saints, Lions…all look like they’re ready to make some noise this year and should skip the rest of the preseason and advance to “GO!”.

The contrary seems true about a few other teams.  I know it’s still early, but jeez Chiefs…might try showing up next time.  That is, if you really plan on participating this season.

  • I don’t mean to sound like a doomsayer, but if I’m a Colts fan I want minute-by-minute updates on Mr. Manning’s status.  It’s clear the four-time MVP is needed and without him in the lineup the Colts necessary reliance on the running game won’t be enough to get them into the post-season for a 10th consecutive season.
  • Touchbacks for everyone!  Hey the kickers are going to have to put more emphasis on this in their new contracts.  It appears someone in the league office has decided that there are too many exciting kick returns in the game and so they have chosen to “spice” it up a bit with what?  More touchbacks!  What a great way to spend an afternoon.

Speaking of touchbacks, does that make Mr. Sebastian Janikowski’s first-round selection look great now?  OK probably not, but wow was he making kickoffs a joke during the Raiders game against the Cardinals the other night.  I can’t believe he’ll be the only one.

While he didn’t light the world on fire, I thought Jake Locker looked pretty good in his first bit of game action.  Maybe there’s something there for the Titans to build on.  I sure hope so, and hope he can shove it back into the faces of those “experts” who did nothing but ridicule his choice to go back to school for another year.  Good

competitive kid who wants to work hard for his team…hmmm.  Who wouldn’t want that?

I suppose the same could be said for Mr. Tebow in Denver.  He had his moments the other night in Dallas, but still shows he will need more time (and patience) to develop.  He’s such a good guy it’s hard not to pull for him, and as a leader he’s got everything you would want.  One thing’s for sure though – “practice” time performance is WAY overrated.  I’ll take the guy that plays great on game day over the guy who “practices great” ANY TIME.

I know Jaguars fans are concerned with Maurice Jones-Drew returning soon, but by all appearances, Rashad Jennings seems to be doing a great impression.  He looks like a potentially great substitute, averaging around 5.5 yards a carry last season.  Even though the Jags were blasted by New England the other night he looked quite ready to take over in MJD’s absence.

So there’s a few thoughts on preseason week one.  Next week – more “Pocket Change” on the preseason.  In the coming weeks, we’ll have “Change” on from each weekend in football.  Anyone have change for a five?

What are your impressions of the week that was?  Hit me up and let me know!
