Top Quarterback Prospect Gunner Kiel Chooses Notre Dame over LSU, Indiana

Kiel committed to Indiana in part because his brother, Dusty, was a quarterback there and they would get to be on the same team. As enticing as being with his brother may have been, Kiel simply has too much talent to wind up at a non-football school like Indiana (no offense to the Hoosiers), and like I said, it looked to me like LSU was a perfect fit.

What is the one thing that LSU has lacked all season offensively? Great quarterback play. Then, to snatch up the top ranked quarterback in the country was a huge coup for the Tigers, but it was a short-lived celebration.

Kiel decided to back down on his second “commitment” and stay closer to home, and he will now play for Brian Kelly and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Being a college student myself, I can vouch for Kiel and say that I would also rather be within driving distance of my home, but I am not a fan of all of his committing and de-committing. If you want to have an open recruiting process, then go ahead and do so, but don’t tell one school you will go there and then ditch them in a couple of weeks.

As far as his commitment goes, I think Notre Dame will wind up being a good fit. It’s a high-profile quarterback position, and Kiel has the ability to flourish. Can he bring Notre Dame back to national relevancy? Only time will tell.
