The Green Bay Packers may have to move on without star safety Nick Collins, who suffered a severe neck injury last year. His career may now be in jeopardy, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel:
“Meanwhile, (Alan) Herman, who also represents safety Nick Collins, said Collins hadn’t met with the doctor who performed his neck surgery and probably wouldn’t for a couple weeks,” Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. “He said no one will know for sure whether Collins will play again until he has a battery of tests to see how his repaired disk healed.”
This could prompt the Packers to select a safety early in the 2012 NFL Draft. They already have a guy who has injury problems in Morgan Burnett, so this position could be of high priority in the coming months. Green Bay’s secondary has been a key part of their dominance the last couple of years, and the play of their safeties even more-so. Nick Collins is a playmaker in the defensive backfield, and he will be sorely missed, though his health should be of first priority.
ESPN’s rumor central says there has been talk of Charles Woodson moving to safety, which is a possibility in the future.
