St. Louis Rams 2012 7 Round Mock Draft
Each day for the next 3 0days (Colts yesterday, Rams today) we’ll have a 7 round mock draft for every team in the league. Today is the Rams. The Rams originally had the #2 pick so I decided to do them second even though they are currently picking 6th in the first round.
I think the Rams have a lot of needs. Offensive tackle is a potential need, improvement in their Linebacker corps, WR, Defensive tackle, maybe another Defensive end later in the draft, another cornerback to play with Finnegan and safety help as well. As such this is a team that really should just add best player available wherever they can.
I’ll be using my own big board to create value though I’m sure there are major differences between my big board and the Rams actual big board. I think that it is very possible that they reach for an offensive linemen at some point, but because I rarely ever reach in my own mock drafts I avoided doing that in this mock.
For scouting reports on all of these players (or nearly all of them and about 200 total) Check out our scouting report page
Round 1: Justin Blackmon WR, Oklahoma State
This was a really easy pick. Blackmon is not a terrific WR prospect and might not be a top 10 prospects in a draft class that was greater at the top, but it’s not and because he also fills a desperate position of need it’s really a sensible and pretty good pick.
Round 2 (pick 33)-Brandon Thompson, DT, Clemson Tigers
Thompson is not a great pass rusher, but is a really, really unappreciated player. He can rush the passer a bit with some work because he’s quick for his size, but he should be a terrific run defender. I see him slipping to the third round in mocks , which is unfair to him I think. Not as physically gifted as Jerel Worthy, but more versatile and consistent Thompson would be a great addition to Fisher’s defense.
Round 2 (pick 39)-Doug Martin, RB, Boise State
This is a value pick for a player that is rising among draftniks. He’s not a burner, and his ceiling isn’t as high as Lamar Miller or David Wilson, but Martin could be akin to Ray Rice or Maurice Jones Drew and hes’ that type of player. I think the Rams could really look at a running back early in the draft because Steve Jackson is getting older and has been nicked up a lot. I think there are other potential picks here. The Rams could really look at a player like Zebrie Sanders here or if Mike Adams somehow falls into the top part of the second round, but I’ll go with Martin here.
Round 3-Leonard Johnson, CB, Iowa State
The Rams added Cortland Finnegan, which fills a big need, but even with Finnegan the Rams still need more talent at the cornerback position. At one point Johnson was in Mayock’s top five cornerbacks and considered a lock for the top 50, but he didn’t have a great combine so he could fall a bit. Johnson is physical, which Fisher will like, and does a terrific job using the sideline as an “extra defender”, which is why he can’t by without being ultra fast or extremely tall. He’s also well build. I didn’t love Johnson as a top 5o pick but early round three is good value for him.
Round 4-Josh Kaddu, LB, Oregon
Kaddu is an underrated prospect that could fit very well as the SAM linebacker for the Rams and this is right about where I have his value. Kaddu has some pass rushing ability, but needs to get stronger. He’s not a starting LB tomorrow, but could develop into one in a year or two.
Round 5-Traded for Brandon Lloyd
Round 6-Tyrone Crawfod, DE, Boise State
Crawford might not be available in round six and it’s likely he’s not, but I always like to consider a player who could faller than anyone expects for whatever reason. In this mock its Crawford. Crawford has prototypical size for a 43 DE and some upside as a pass rusher. He’s definitely a guy who can fill out a rotation and spot start as someone who has the strength to play the run game, but also the hustle and motor to make some plays in the passing game. He’s not Robert Quinn, someone who can just completely overwhelm his opponent with his physical ability, but he is a guy who can help out a team.
Round 7-Markus Zusevics, T, Iowa
And the Rams finally grab an Offensive linemen. I expect the Rams to take a Tackle earlier in the actual draft than I did here, maybe even Zebrie Sanders as high as round two, or a Matt Mcants in a round three. It just didn’t happen in my mock. Zusevics has starting potential which generally means he’d be drafted earlier than this, but he tore a pectoral muscle at the combine (it cost Marvin Austin the entire 2011 NFL season) so he should still be available in the 7th round.
