2012 Kansas City Chiefs Seven Round Mock Draft

1. First Round, 11th overall: Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis

The Kansas City Chiefs signed Kelly Gregg last season, but he’s getting older and I think getting an elite athlete at the nose tackle position like Dontari Poe could be a very nice fit for the Chiefs. To me, Poe has a little bit questionable of a motor, and his production wasn’t great but athletically he passes the test. Adding a space-eating nose tackle like Poe could be just what the doctor ordered for the Chiefs’ defense, which is actually pretty scary good considering they didn’t even have Eric Berry last year. I think trading down (or up) is certainly an option here. The Chiefs could make a move for Ryan Tannehill, or possibly trade down and try to still get a guy like Dre’ Kirkpatrick later.

2. Second Round, 44th overall: Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska

The Kansas City Chiefs have one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL in Brandon Flowers (in my opinion) but they also lost one of the most underrated corners in the league when Brandon Carr took a big paycheck and moved to Dallas. That does leave something of a void at the other corner spot, which was filled by Stanford Routt early in the offseason, but I think adding a guy like Dennard would be a wise move since he is exactly the type of player this team is looking for and a great value in the second round if he’s available.

3. Third Round, 74th overall: Brandon Washington, OL, Miami

The Chiefs could very well still look to upgrade the interior of the offensive line, even with the addition of potential Pro Bowler Eric Winston (great move). Washington is a big, nasty player who would probably play right or left guard for the Chiefs, completing their youth overahaul on the offensive line with Rodney Hudson and Jon Asamoah also coming up as good looking prospects. Since Washington came out after his junior year playing out of position as a left tackle (which he handled really well, actually) last year, I think he could wind up being a steal here.

4. Fourth Round, 107th overall: Kheeston Randall, DL, Texas

The Chiefs seem to always find great value in the draft in recent years, so getting a guy like Randall who was considered a very solid prospect prior to this season. He is a perfect fit for the 3-4 defense as a 5 technique and would give the Chiefs some depth on their front line.

5. Fifth Round, 146th overall: Audie Cole, LB, North Carolina State

The Chiefs pick up some depth at inside linebacker here and get a guy in Cole who was really productive and has excellent intangibles that the Chiefs seek in a player. In the fifth round, you’re seeking a guy who can produce on special teams as well as have potential as a future starter, and I think Cole fits that bill. He is a hard enough worker that he could really be a steal at this juncture.

6. Sixth Round, 182nd overall: DeVier Posey, WR, Ohio State

The Chiefs always find value in the later rounds, so I really like the fit of Posey at this point. He’s got a ton of upside and due to the fact that he sat out quite a bit of the 2011 season, he could be had for a low price. For the Chiefs, he could develop into a solid #2 or #3 receiver if they are able to upgrade the quarterback position in the near future.

7. Seventh Round, 218th overall: Donte’ Paige-Moss, LB, North Carolina

The Chiefs could stand to add some depth in the pass rushing department, and they find another potential late-round gem here in Donte’ Paige Moss, a guy who was once considered a potential 1st round pick before character concerns started to sprout up in bulk. I think if the Chiefs get him here, it’s a nice low risk, potentially high reward selection.

8. Seventh Round, 238th overall (from Patriots): Case Keenum, QB, Houston

Because Case Keenum deserves to be drafted. After the incredible collegiate career he had, for him not to be drafted would be a tragedy (of NFL Draft proportions) and I think the Chiefs would be a good team for him to land with. He would get a shot to make the roster in camp and could stick on the team’s practice squad, as it looks like the top three spots are set with Cassel, Brady Quinn, and Ricky Stanzi, but you may as well stash another guy away. Why not Keenum?
