Last year, as a true sophomore, Logan Thomas put himself on the watch-list for top QB prospects for the 2013 draft. Thomas finished the year with 24 touchdowns, 3000 yards, and only 10 interceptions.

The 6’6”, 250 pound specimen is expected to contend for early first round consideration.  As well as having ideal size, Thomas has a strong arm and surprising athleticism.

Thomas’ goals for the season should be decreasing his turnovers, increasing his completion percentage, and refining his technique in the pocket. Through two games this season, he has failed to move forward as a quarterback.

The story of the stat-sheet is that Thomas’ completion percentage is only 59%, almost identical to last year and he is on pace for less yards. However he has a higher touchdown percentage and has yet to throw a pick.

The tape expands upon this story. Thomas still is very inconsistent with his mechanics. He fails to set his feet, throws off balance, and holds onto the ball far too long. Last season Thomas was very effective eluding sacks, partially because of how difficult he is to bring down, but also because of how quick he was at getting the ball out of his hands.  Thomas was sacked 17 times last year through 14 games and in just two games this year he has been sacked four times.

Thomas seems uncomfortable in the pocket and it shows in his passing. His accuracy has not improved from last year and he is leaving the pocket more than last year.

The season is still young and Thomas can surely improve his technique. NFL teams are going to fall in love with his physical skillset and upside, but at this rate Thomas might want to seriously consider returning for his senior year.
