Cardinals WR John Brown with 2 TDs to help beat 49ers
By Peter Smith
The Arizona Cardinals are off to a 3-0 start in no small part to the contributions of their rookie wide receiver John Brown. Brown’s two touchdowns helped the Cardinals beat the San Francisco 49ers and give them sole possession of first place in the NFC West. After a strong camp and preseason performance, Brown has kicked off the season with three touchdowns in the past two games.
With backup quarterback Drew Stanton in for Carson Palmer due to injury, Brown and Stanton connected 4 times for 52 yards including a 24 yard reception that went for one of the touchdowns. On the season, Brown now has 9 catches for 109 yards and 3 touchdowns through 3 weeks.
A third round pick out of Pittsburg State, Brown was a popular prospect among many draftniks and the Cardinals took him and so far, he has been everything they had hoped for and then some. In a receiving corp with Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd, and tight end John Carlson, the Cardinals have the most potent set of weapons since their Super Bowl appearance with Kurt Warner and Anquan Boldin were with the team.
With teammates drawing attention from teams’ best defenders, Brown has taken advantage of mismatches. Today’s victim on multiple occasion was fellow rookie and 49ers first round pick Jimmy Ward. Brown also had an opportunity to get a third touchdown that would have beaten Chris Culliver badly but Stanton’s pass was just too far out of Brown’s reach.
The Cardinals cruise into their bye week with a 3-0 record and now have two weeks to prepare to take on the Denver Broncos on the road. If critics are not buying into the Cardinals yet, it will be difficult to ignore a win in Mile High Stadium against a team many believe is the favorite to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl.
