Eagles WR Jordan Matthews comes up big in victory
By Peter Smith
The Philadelphia Eagles were able to edge out the Washington Redskins in a slug fest that included a brawl. In the 37-34 victory, their rookie wide receiver Jordan Matthews came up with the first touchdown reception of his career. He was able to get back into the end zone for a second time as he caught 8 total passes on 9 targets for 59 yards and the two trips to the end zone.
Matthews was a surprise pick to some as many onlookers expected the Eagles and head coach Chip Kelly to go with a sleeker, faster receiver to replace DeSean Jackson, who departed in an ugly offseason mess that had him go to Washington after he was released. Nevertheless, while not everyone bought into Matthews’ ability or fit, there were some that expected numbers and production by virtue of being in the Eagles scheme that produces big results.
At least against Washington, Nick Foles targeted only Jeremy Maclin more often, throwing 10 passes his way as opposed to 9 to Matthews. Maclin had more yardage on his 8 receptions, but Matthews came up big when the Eagles needed him. After only three catches in the first two games of the season, Matthews’ 8 in this game could mean he’s ready to start producing more consistently for the Eagles.
The Eagles have spotted opponents leads in every single game this season, but managed to come back and win each time, giving them a 3-0 record. They prepare to go on the road to play the San Francisco 49ers and Matthews could be a big reason they are able to stay undefeated.
