Virginia Tech DT Luther Maddy to miss rest of season, seek redshirt
By Peter Smith
Virginia Tech defensive tackle Luther Maddy has announced that he will need to have another surgery on his knee, forcing him to miss the rest of this season. The Hokie defensive lineman suffered a torn meniscus earlier in the season, which he had surgery on to repair, has apparently not healed properly and requires another procedure to fix. Maddy intends to get a medical redshirt and play another year in Blacksburg, which would obviously take him out of the NFL Draft this year.

The Hokies came into the season with one of the more intriguing defensive line duos with Maddy and defensive end Dadi Nicholas. Both were undersized with Maddy listed at 6’1″ 293lbs and Nicholas, listed 6’3″ 218lbs, but able to penetrate and cause problems for opponents in the backfield. Should Nicholas, still a junior, opts to return for his senior season, Hokie fans may still get to see these two play on the same defensive line for the 2015 season.
Maddy could ultimately opt to go ahead and declare for the NFL Draft, but at this point, he seems intent on playing another year for Virginia Tech and trying to showcase what he can do for NFL teams for the 2016 NFL Draft. Another year could allow Maddy to continue to get stronger and add weight while still maintaining his quickness to be able to penetrate and cause problems in the backfield. For the time being, Maddy just needs to make sure that knee is right before he does anything else.
