Oct 24, 2014; Santa Clara, CA, USA; Oregon Ducks quarterback Marcus Mariota (8) prepares to throw a pass against the California Golden Bears in the first quarter at Levi

Marcus Mariota is the best quarterback in college football but as a 2015 NFL Draft prospect, he’s boom-or-bust. He could very well make the sweep of the Heisman Trophy and the BCS National Championship this year. But that in no way means that he’s going to be able to have the same success in the NFL.

Sure, that new age, dual threat with running and throwing sounds good but the odds are against him making that happen. Many like to compare him to Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers because he had early success in his career. But he’s much more like Robert Griffin III and NFL defenses seem to have adapted to him plus he’s not the same.

At some point, Mariota is going to have learn how to get it done from the pocket and that would take some time. Michael Vick, the best running quarterback of all-time, learned late under Andy Reed how to be an NFL quarterback but he’s always broke off (hurt) now. What Mariota is doing with the Oregon Ducks right now does not translate into an NFL franchise quarterback at all so watch out.
