His Handicap

The reason why Montgomery didn’t have much of a year this year is because he was held back by his quarterback Kevin Hogan. Montgomery had the same 61 catches this year as he had last year but last year, he had 958 yards to 661 this year. With the same opportunities, his yardage was almost cut in half because Hogan had problems getting the ball down the field.

So his opponents were ready for the bubble screens that came because of his ability to run after the catch knowing his quarterback was struggling. So his average yards per reception went from 15.7 in 2013 to 9.9 in 2014 while his touchdown receptions went from 10 to three. With the skill-set the Montgomery has, he should have been a Heisman finalist at least but Hogan was what he was this year.
