Is Marcus Mariota falling out of the top 10?

At the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine, the quarterback prospect Marcus looked like he could get pro style quarterbacking down one day. And when I say one day, I don’t mean anytime soon because he looked a little off. His footwork wasn’t smooth but it was better than I expected and he was reasonably accurate too.

The problem, which I pointed out in a previously written article is that he threw the ball late. No. 1 quarterback prospect Jameis Winston threw the ball before the receiver even made his break. That’s the timing in an NFL passing game that quarterbacks are generally supposed to have.

But since the ball got to where it was supposed to go a good portion of the time for not having receivers he knows, Mariota was applauded. And after falling with a few of the media scouts, he was elevated again and they started to question if he would go ahead of Winston. But most of the media still had Winston as the No.1 quarterback prospect in the draft.

Then came his pro day, shown on NFL Network.

And he actually seems to have regressed since since he threw at the combine.  He still waits until way to long after the receiver makes his break to throw and misses too may of them. And this was a pro day where it’s scripted and he knows all the receivers he’s throwing to.

This led to NFL Network’s Curtis Conway saying that Martiota may fall to Chip Kelly and the Philadelphia Eagles at No. 20. And it makes sense because that’s the only place Mariota can go to where he can go in there and play right away. And we can forget about someone trading up for him because Kelly doesn’t even want to do that.

And the teams in the top 10 aren’t looking for a quarterback that has what Mariota showed.

He better try to kill his private workouts.
