23. player. 50. The Detroit Lions’ offensive line took a step backwards last year as a combination of injuries and inconsistent play took a toll. The need on the offensive line has gotten a lot of attention this offseason, but mostly looking at prospects with tackle-guard versatility. To me, looking at a tackle makes the most sense if there was a clear improvement over Riley Reiff. That upgrades the left tackle position and moving Reiff results in an upgrade wherever he lands. I don’t see that prospect in this draft, but I’m still going with an offensive lineman with versatility. Travis Swanson showed much better at center than guard as a rookie last season, so I’m taking Erving to fill the hole currently at left guard and give the Lions a solid option behind Swanson in case of injury. Comparisons to the Lions and Saints offenses are warranted given the coaching connection, but the Saints offense has been at its best with strong play from the interior of their offensive line. It’s time for the Lions to follow that blueprint.
