Suprise!
Okay, not really.
According to Pro Football Talk, the Miami Dolphins have picked up the fifth-year option on quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Tannehill is one of the three quarterbacks, that includes Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III taken in the top 10 in 2012. And after a carer year in 2014, the his option was picked up just like Luck and Griffin.
Speaking of that career year, Tannehill threw for over 4,000 yards, had 27 touchdowns to 12 interceptions and a quarterback rating of 92.8. Word out of Miami is that the Dolphins plan to get a deal done with him before the opener. He is looked at as a franchise player and has been in talks on a long-term deal for some time now.
Picking up the option now is like giving Tannehill a cheaper franchise tag, giving the Dolphins some breathing room until they can get a deal done. And the quarterback gets $16 million with an inury guarantee that covers the 2016 season. There hasn’t been any huffing and puffing coming out of Miami as far as negotiations go.
So the Dolphins and Tannehill are likely on pace to get a deal done by the Week, 1 deadline. Through 2016, the Dolphins are in the driver’s seat to keep Tannehill, which is a good position to be in. But they should go ahead and get a deal done sooner than later because Tannehill looks to be coming into his own.
That way, the Dolphins can simply focus on building around him on offense and defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh on defense.
