Many criticized the Dallas Cowboys for selecting cornerback Byon Jones in the first round of the draft. That accused Owner Jerry Jones for making an “Al Davis pick” for his performance at the combine. But Jones is only a combine star to those that didn’t watch UConn play football in 2014.
He has good tape and he’s showing the Cowboys they didn’t make a mistake so far this offseason. The Cowboys liked him so much, they didn’t even expect him to be available when the picked. And since he’s been in drills with the Cowboys safety Barry Church sure does like what he has seen.
Church told the Dallas Morning News, “Aw, he’s a freak athlete. He has tremendous hands. He never lets that ball bobble. I definitely see him out going up with the receivers for contested balls and bringing them down. He can jump with the best of them. He just seems like he’s super athletic and willing to learn. I’m excited for him.”
It looks like Jones is going to be a starter, playing alongside Brandon Carr and Orlando Scandrick. At 6’1″, 200 pounds and 45-inch vertical leap, he’s going to give opposing receivers problems. And with guys like Deion Sanders close to the organization, I expect Jones to learn his craft pretty quickly.
When asked about drafting a running back days ago, Jerry Jones told NFL Network that his priority was the defense. He stayed true to his word by taking Jones then talented edge-rusher Randy Gregory. The Cowboys ran the ball so much last year in order not to expose their defense too much because it wasn’t that good.
But now, the Cowboys defense looks like it can get itself off the field.
Look out NFL!
