2016 NFL Draft: Quarterback Needy Teams
By Jon Dove
Oct 22, 2015; Santa Clara, CA, USA; San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick (7) after being sacked on back-to-back snaps by the Seattle Seahawks during the fourth quarter at Levi
San Francisco 49ers (2-5)
Colin Kaepernick’s future with the San Francisco 49ers is cloudy because of his inconstant play and contract. The 49ers will have an opportunity to move on from Kaepernick this offseason without owing him any more money. This appears to be a likely scenario given Kaepernick’s struggles and inability to take the next step in his development.
The 49ers are in position to make a run at the No. 1 overall pick which would make landing Jared Goff a possibility. Goff would give the 49ers a more traditional quarterback who wins from the pocket rather than with his feet.
San Francisco is in a better position than most teams because they will have options. If they don’t feel good about any of the quarterback prospects in the draft they could hang on to Kaepernick and hope he turns it around.
This wouldn’t solve the issues at quarterback but it would allow them to improve other areas of the roster.
