TCU Horned Frogs receiver Josh Doctson went into Thursday’s game as the No. 4 receiver prospect. Mississippi’s Laquon Treadwell, Ohio State’s Michael Thomas and Baylor’s Corey Coleman are the receivers many see as ahead of him. But with representatives from two-thirds of the NFL’s teams on hand, he set a new school record for receptions in a season.
In the game, Doctson had 11 catches for 183 yards and two touchdowns in a 40-10 win over West Virginia. His 13th and 14th TDs of the year put him at No. 2 in the FBS one the season behind Coleman. To go with the TDs this season, Doctson has 71 1,250 yards to lead the FBS so far.
That’s big-time production but NFL scouts may attribute that productions to TCU’s spread offense. But setting records for the most catches in a season in school history in eight games deserves high praise regardless. Doctson passed Josh Boyce, now a member of the New England Patriots, for his school record.
Physically, Doctson is 6’3″, 195 pounds with great leaping ability and body control to adjust to the ball in the air. We’ll see what he runs the 40 in at the combine but he looks pretty fast while not being an absolute blazer. What he showed Thursday night along with his production give scouts a lot to think about.
