The Miami Dolphins started playing much better, winning 2-straight after firing head coach Joe Philbin. Defensive end Cameron Wake was a big part of that with six sacks in those two games. He was the most dominant defensive player in the NFL during that time frame.

He managed to get one sack in Thursday’s 36-7 loss to the New Enland Patriots but didn’t finish the game. But late in the third quarter, Wake was the injury to add to the insult of such a bad loss. He was carted to the locker room after suffering an apparent Achilles injury and he did not return.

And NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday morning that Wake indeed tore his Achilles and is out for the remainder of the season. Along with the sack, he had two tackles, one for loss before leaving the game. For more injury to insult, the Dolphins also lost tackle Ja’Wuan James to a toe injury in the first half.

Losing Wake for the rest of the season is a crushing blow to the Dolphins defense that played well up to Thursday. Over the last five years, he’s been one of the top pass-rushers in the NFL so he will not be easily replaced. All of the optimism coming into Thursday night with the culture change was quelled by the Patriots

Wake’s injury was the big injury added to insult.
