Oakland Raiders wide receiver Amari Cooper has been the immediate impact player they had hoped for. His three 100-yard games in his first six tied Hall of Fame tight in Mike Ditka. And finally, it is his third one the went for 133 yards and a 52-yard TD that won him Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week for Week 7, announced by the NFL Friday.
If you ask me, the move he put on a San Diego Chargers defender at the end of his TD was enough to win the award. This is the first time Cooper has won Pepsi Rookie of the Week honors in seven tries. But he has been nominated three times and just didn’t get it for one reason or another.
That actually bodes well for him winning Pepsi Rookie of the Year honors at the conclusion of the season. Five players will be nominated for it and Cooper is sure to be one of them, barring injury. His 33 catches for 519 yards and three touchdowns so far have him within reach of a lot of rookie receiving records.
Quarterback Derek Carr, a rookie last year, set a few rookie records last year himself. And this year, he gets the pleasure of helping his favorite receiver set rookie records and win the 2015 Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year award. That would be the icing on the cake as a testament for how well the Raiders have drafted the last two years.
The drafting curse has been lifted off of Raider Nation.
